about

'Piano' is the first track from my ongoing musical project entitled 'Shadowplay'. This project is me exploring and expressing my own personal grief, and 'Piano' is an embracing of my sorrow and the solace that can be found in playing music. The making of this music has been deeply personal and profoundly important in my journey with grief and my healing from deep loss.

Immense thank you to my friends Paul Buzza for his beautiful camera work, Suzie Mac and Matt Gandy for their help with this film, and to Reverend Brian McQuillen for allowing us to film at the beautiful St Goran Church in Cornwall.

Thank you also to the string players that lend their gorgeous musicianship to this track: Ben Sutcliffe (violin) and Kath Buckler (cello).

All music composed, arranged, engineered, mixed and mastered by myself. Video directed and edited by myself.

This project is dedicated to my late mother Josephine Skews, and to all of those dealing with grief in all its forms. I hope the music of this project might resonate with you and help in some small way. Making this project has been an instrumental part in my healing and my journey through grief. I'm so glad to finally be sharing some of this work.

I strongly recommend the book The Wild Edge of Sorrow: Rituals of Renewal and the Sacred Work of Grief by Francis Weller, should you be seeking some guidance through your journey with grief and bereavement.

More music to follow soon enough. Thank you as ever for your incredible support. It means the world.

Much love. Much peace.

lyrics

There’s a roar in my jungle.
A howl at my moon.
A tear from the eye of Pierrot my fool.
There’s a crack in the mask I’ve been wearing since school,
And ghosts haunt the room in my roof.

There’s a fire in my belly that burns me alive.
Thoughts sting like bees and my mind is a hive.
There’s a scream on the wind that turns my turbine,
And wolves stalk my halls in the night

Friend of mine,
My major light
In minor night,
Make it alright again.

Love is a vulture that tears me apart.
Hope is a joker who hoaxes my heart.
And god is a monster of murderous art,
But song is a flame in the dark
